Tonga Cable Limited Selects Pactel International to Support the Fibre Optic Rollout in the Pacific Islands by Supplying IP Connectivity

Sydney, Australia, 18th September 2013, Pactel International (“Pactel”), a leading satellite communications provider in Asia-Pacific and a member of the SpeedCast Group, today announced that Tonga Cable Limited (“TCL”) has selected Pactel to provide IP connectivity for their new fibre optic cable, connecting the islands of Tonga to an international fibre network via the Southern Cross cable in Fiji. Fibre connectivity will replace the existing satellite network, also provided by Pactel, which is planned to be deployed as a backup link to provide automatic redundancy in case of a fibre network failure.
Tonga’s growing network has expanded from 40Mbps to 160Mbps and is expected to reach unprecedented levels of performance with minimal delay. The residents of Tonga will now have access to faster Internet speed and higher bandwidth capacity at a more affordable price.
Robert Bolouri, CEO, of TCL said: “Pactel International has a track record of providing reliable connectivity into the Pacific Islands. We are confident that consolidating Tonga’s fibre and satellite services with Pactel will allow Tonga Cable to reach new levels of Internet service performance and enhance reliability of the entire network”.
The service is supported by 24/7 network monitoring and support from Pactel’s Network Operations Centre and, if required, Pactel’s field technician support.
The connection between Tonga and Fiji is part of the regional connectivity project which is aimed at connecting the Pacific Islands through fibre optic cable.
“The roll-out of the Pacific Islands’ fibre network will enable our customers to have access to the worlds fastest and most reliable Internet connectivity, that they were previously unable to enjoy”, said Andrew Taylor, General Manager at Pactel International. “We are honoured that TCL chose Pactel for IP connectivity services,” Taylor added.
